This is a developmental condition but may not always be diagnosed in childhood for a high functioning individual who may learn to cope in childhood by copying how others behave. They may not present with a typical pattern of symptoms and behaviour but still appear idiosyncratic. Also known as ‘Aspergers’, there is no specific treatment for this condition but it may help a person to understand their unique  individuality and needs, and thus improve their coping. If there is also depressed mood or severe anxiety symptoms, specific medical treatments will be needed. Many of those with ASD also have ADHD for which medical treatment may also help with improving lifestyle, relationships and achieving goals.
