This is a developmental condition but may not always be diagnosed in childhood for a high functioning individual who may have learned to cope by copying how others behave. They may thus not present with a typical pattern of symptoms and behaviour, but still appear idiosyncratic. Also known as ‘Asperger’s’, there is no specific treatment for this condition but it may help a person to understand what makes them unique and individual. There are other associated conditions which may be assisted with treatment, though.

Many of those with ASD also have ADHD. Medical treatment for ADHD can make a marked difference for those living with ASD in improving lifestyle, relationships and achieving goals. Specific treatment for depressed mood or severe anxiety symptoms may also be needed.
